Why Use Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergent
Wondering why you should make the switch to all-natural and eco-friendly laundry detergent?
There are lots of reasons to ditch the chemical-laden powders and liquids that you see at your local grocery store. Laundry detergent is one of the easiest places to start with your journey to a more all natural home and it benefits not just you and your family's health, but the health of the planet, too.
1. It's better for your clothes
Natural laundry detergent is actually better for your clothes than the detergents that you've been using for most of your life.
Natural ingredients are gentler on fabrics and colors. This helps keep your clothes looking newer for longer.
All-natural detergents are formulated to remove dirt and bacteria from your clothing, it's likely the same sort of stuff your grandparents were using before mass-produced detergents arrived for our convenience. Regular detergents have strong scents to make your clothes smell fresh, but they aren't actually cleaning them of dirt.
2. It's better for your skin (and therefore your health!)
Just like all chemical cleaners, whether you use them on your dishes, your clothes, or your countertops, they leave a small residue behind. Over time this residue builds up.
Each time you wear your clothes, especially if you sweat, some of that residue moves onto your skin, the largest organ in your body. Your skin absorbs roughly 60% of things in comes in contact with.
Natural detergents are also gentle on you skin, so they are much better or people with dry or irritated skin, eczema, and allergies.
3. It's better for the environment
Eco-friendly laundry detergent is, of course, eco-friendly. It is a much better option for the environment than chemical-based detergents. The water that drains from your washing machine has to go somewhere and it takes many of those chemicals with it.
According to a Seventh Generation study, if every U.S. home replaced one bottle of petroleum-based laundry detergent with an eco-friendly, plant-based detergent, 149,000 barrels of oil could be saved. That is enough to heat and cool 8,500 homes for a year.
